The Koala Coast koala populations dropped by 68% in the ten years leading up to 2008. According to the Department of Environment and Resource Management’s Koala Coast Koala Population Report 2010, a comprehensive survey of the koala population showed that it dropped by more than 50% between 2005 and 2008. Koala numbers continue to fall.

In the short term, cars and dogs are the biggest killers of koalas. Roads are a major threat as they create barriers and separations in koala habitats. When koalas move along the ground, if a road is in the way, they will cross it. This has devastating consequences. Collisions with cars account for at least 330 koala deaths per year in the Koala Coast.

Koalas leave their trees to;

  • to change trees in their home range

  • to find new territory

  • in the case of destroyed habitat

  • young koalas dispersing from their mothers to establish a home range.

in the breeding season, koalas will move through other home ranges in search of a mate.
