Australia Hiring Koala Cuddlers

Tourism Australia has launched another edition of itsannual Best Jobs in the World campaign, inviting young people to apply for job titles that include everything from “Chief Funster” to “Outback Adventurer” and “Wildlife Caretaker.”

Job descriptions are anything but ordinary, with nary a mention of data or office-related skill sets. Instead, duties involve waking up kangaroos, swimming with dolphins, cuddling koalas, and uncovering the country’s best bars and restaurants.

First launched in 2009 in Queensland, the campaign has become a huge marketing success, drawing tens of thousands of applicants every year. Applicants must be between 18-30 years of age.

Special consideration will be given to candidates from the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, as youth from these countries are eligible for Australian working holiday visas.

It’s no wonder the country’s tourism office is targeting young people, given they contribute $12 billion AUD (€9.4 million) in total tourism spending. On average, they also reportedly spend $7,279 (€5,690) per trip, tend to stay longer, spread out across the country and often return to the country with their families.

The six ‘Best Jobs in the World’ titles include:

  • Chief Funster (New South Wales)

  • Outback Adventurer (Northern Territory)

  • Park Ranger (Queensland)

  • Wildlife Caretaker (South Australia)

  • Lifestyle Photographer (Melbourne)

  • Taster Master (Western Australia)

The contest closes April 10.
