Koala Dies After Being Caught In Rabbit Trap

A koala caught in a rabbit trap in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs has been put down.

The koala was rescued from a tree at Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Park with its front paw stuck in the steel serrated-jaw of the trap.

Rescuers say the koala may have been attached to the trap for up to two weeks, causing extensive injury and infection.

The koala was given anti-biotics and painkillers but had to be euthanized after vets deemed the injury too infected to treat.

Senior investigator of Animal Cruelty Hotline Barrie Tapp has warned against the use of illegal rabbit traps.

He said anyone found with one in their possession faces a large fine.

“It’s a very hideous contraption that’s highly illegal under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. It’s a $24,000 fine (to) even (have one) in your possession,” he said.

“They are outlawed. It’s just a matter of finding them so if anybody finds one or knows of any person selling them, give us a ring.”
