Calls For Action On Koala Status

CONSERVATIONISTS have called on Environment Minister Andrew Powell to list koalas as a vulnerable species across the entire state.

The animal is listed as “threatened but of low concern” outside the state’s south east, where it is regarded as “vulnerable”.

Independent wildlife watchdog Queensland Species Technical Committee recommended the change.

Committee chairman John Neldner said a “vulnerable status” would require projects affecting koala habitats to be assessed by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.

Dr Neldner said the committee recommended the change in line with the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

The federal government listed the koala as vulnerable along the east coast in May 2012 but the state has resisted extending that status.

In Redland City, it is believed there are only 2000 koalas left.
