Hawthorn Volunteer Brings Joy Out Of The Wilderness

WHETHER it’s nursing orphan koalas or caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease, volunteer Kerry McMahon manages to successfully combine her two passions.

Ms McMahon brings her orphaned friends to her job in Hawthorn at Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria where she takes calls assisting carers or those with the disease.

“My colleagues love it,” Ms McMahon said.

“A lot have never seen a koala up close, so people get to have a little cuddle.

Based in Apollo Bay for half the week, she has cared for injured wildlife from penguins to hawks, as a member of the Otway Wildlife Group.

She is nursing four joey koalas, with the aim of releasing them back into the wild.

“What I love about it is releasing things again,” she said.

“I let a hawk go the other day and it was amazing seeing him fly off.

“One koala I helped a few years ago was released and I can actually see her on my property eating gum leaves now.
